Before you commit to a policy…

1. You should read the fine print.
One of the things many people fail to do is to read the policy offered to them well so that they have a better understanding of the agreement they are getting into. This makes for less misunderstandings in the future and better filing of claims.

2. Talk to your agent about it.
Some people have a home insurance agent, so you’d best talk to him or her first so you can better understand the intricacies of the policy you are looking to get. Insurance agents can give you a less technical and more understandable explanation of what’s written in the fine print you just read.

You should also make sure that you come off as a low risk homeowner so you get the chance to be given lower insurance premiums.
